Long May She Reign Book Review

Updated: Jul 8, 2020

My Thoughts: Long May She Reign is a super cool book. As a feminist, I try to make it my priority to read books with a strong heroine lead, and on this account, this book gets a big thumbs up. Not only is the main character Freya a brilliant scientist who wants to change the world, but she also does what right, even when she wants to do otherwise. This book also has a bit of a mystery... just a heads up. who gets thrown into a job she doesn't want... ruling a kingdom.

My Summary: Freya, never wanted to be queen. She was twenty-third in line to the throne so it didn't seem very likely that it would happen, but when a party that all the court was attending gets poisoned, she gets thrust into the position with no clue of what to do. Freya must navigate though a demanding father, a small court who believes she may have poisoned the party, a group of advisors that takes nothing she says into account, multiple assignation attempts, and a bunch of people who want the throne... so nothing to bad...

Overall Rating: 7.5

Justification: It took me a second to get into this book, it starts out kind of slow and the boom- everyone is dead. From then on I was pretty much hooked. Not only was cheering on Freya, as she tried to figure out what she was doing (poor girl had no clue), but also resolve the mystery of who killed everyone at the dinner party. Romance is okay in this book. While I was cheering the couple on, I felt like they could get together or not and it wouldn't be that big of a deal to me, but I don't know maybe you'll ship them more.

Character Rating: 8

Justification: Freya: Freya is such a cool character. A total introvert that gets forced into the spotlight. The way she solves problems is so unique that it makes me love her that much more. One of the first things she does as queen is to make her laboratory in the torture chambers of the castle. I think it truly says something that her favorite place in the castle is the one place most everyone else is afraid to go in. Freya is one to forge her own path, and that's what makes her a great heroine.

Fitzroy: The bastard son of the king, who was not in the running to inherit the throne. Fitzroy tries to always have a smile on his face, and make fun of himself in hopes of getting in the good graces of the king and court, but he is actually is deep...who knew

Naomi: Naomi is Freya's best friend (pre crown and during). Naomi is the ultimate friend. She supports Freya though everything she does and is her assistant during all of her experiments. Even when mourning the death of her brother, Naomi, does all she can to help Freya as she takes on the tasks of Queen. All I will say is that everyone should have a Naomi in their life.

My Favorite Line: “Perhaps you'll gave to kiss him again, if you're not sure. Gather more evidence. In the name of science.” -Naomi

1. Freya and Fitzroy have a thing for each other... and then she takes him into custody because she thinks that he poisoned the party... btw he didn't.

2. The person that poisoned the party, was Madeline (Freya's new friend). She was tired of the glamour that people had at court when others were starving on the street, and new that the current king would not do a thing.

3. Freya uses science to trick the oncoming army into thinking that their gods choose her rule, and that's the reason why she was spared from the poison that killed everyone else.
